Physically I landed on AMS on Sunday morning, but it will take some time before I’m fully here again. The past week I’ve spent in Rwanda was amazing and filled with extremes.
Cycling through the land of the 1000 hills
The landscape was beautiful. In 386 kilometers (240 miles) we’ve climbed 5980 meters (3.7 miles) and enjoyed stunning views over green hills, banana trees and old volcanos. Thousands of people cheered us on shouting Mzungu (white skinned) or Courage. Thanks to the police escort we could use the full width of the (with some exceptions) excellent roads and race down with speeds up to 60-80kmh (37-50mph).
No wonder two of our stages are part of the official Tour du Rwanda.
Seeing how Compassion works
On Sunday and Wednesday we spent time on two Compassion projects. I was amazed to see how each child is cared after and monitored in great detail. Health, education, wellbeing, no stone is left unturned to make sure that children from the poorest of families get every chance to flourish. We met several former Compassion children who are now taking important positions in the government and business and often in turn now help others. And of course I met my own sponsor child Christian!
Helping more than 160 children
Personally I found sponsors for 5 children and raised €5856. If you haven’t done so yet, you can still sponsor or donate. Thanks for every one who already did. Not only are you changing the lives of these children, but also those of their families and the nation they once will serve!
